Thousands of dogs and their owners descend on International Drive this weekend, as the American Kennel Club hosts its national championship in Orlando for the first time since 2002.
A record-breaking 3,938 four-legged competitors are expected in the Orange County Convention Center on Dec. 17-18 for the annual AKC/Eukanuba National Championship, dubbed the “Super Bowl of the dog world.” They will compete for more than $225,000 in prize money.
A host of I-Drive hotels are rolling out the red carpet for the furry tourists — even some that don’t normally allow guests of the canine kind.
The Peabody Orlando, which has a policy of not allowing dogs, is expecting just under 100 of them during the weekend. Staffers are even asking for the dog’s name as part of each reservation, so the hotel can greet the animals personally when they arrive, General Manager Barb Bowden said.
